Panasonic and the missing 3MB

I have been using raw conversion software based on dcraw and have discovered that files shot on Panasonic cameras with Lumix lenses are bigger than the cameras jpgs and when converted via other programmes such as Photoshop. The red line on the example shown is how the camera jpg and an ACR conversion convert the file.

When I cropped the file to this red line I lost just over 3MB. I was aware of this phenomenon but I hadn't realised quite how much was involved. This example is using a 7-14 zoom, but it happens with all the Panasonic lenses.

Could we please have our 3MB back?
