Fuji X-Pro 1 - Close ups and mid range ISO's

The macro function, or close up shooting is still similar to the X100 in that its pressing two buttons to allow the lens to focus reasonably closely. Not ideal, but its not really that much of a problem. Once in this mode it actually performs well. As you can see the bokeh is nice.

Shooting these images under dull conditions does however bring home one of this cameras great strengths. To get a decent shutter speed and depth of field I used ISO 400, 640 and 800. The first two are still amazingly clean and look like ISO 100 on any other camera. Its only at ISO 800 that the first small signs of graininess / luminance noise start to appear. In terms of comparisons, ISO 800 looks like ISO 200 on a Panasonic GX1 and / or a Sony NEX-7.  So there seems to be a two-stop advantage in terms of the clarity of the image over both those camera. Remember this is still without an AA filter, so these images shot on jpgs. are still very sharp.

When I say there is a two stop advantage, this is assuming the Sony and Panasonic shots being very accurately exposed and carefully processed raw files. The Fuji jpgs. at these mid-range ISO's are WAY better then the jpgs from the GX1 or NEX-7 and indeed the ISO 640 pictures look like well-exposed and processed raw files taken at ISO 100 on most other cameras.

This is what I hoped and expected to see when I decided to buy the camera, and certainly helps me cope with its "eccentricities".
