The Magic Hour

Photographers and film makers often refer to the 1st. and last hours of any day as the "Magic Hour"The sun is low in the sky, and with a warm golden red hue. The shadows are long and the sunlight picks out the occasional detail.
Terence Malick shot large portions of the film Days of Heaven during this time of the day, and its use in movies and photographs adds drama to many situations.

This magic hour was sunset on New Years Day 2010. A freezing cold day was suddenly lifted by the warmest light I've ever seen. I shot these pictures with a Leica M9 and 50mm f1.1 Voigtlander Nokton lens and they have become one of my favourite sets.

This image in particular, (below) of an ancient motte and bailey castle has become a particular favourite of mine.
