Sony A77 Raw samples

There are a few raw samples starting to surface of the Sony 24MP sensor in the A77, and these are presumably very similar to what the NEX-7 will produce.

There has been lots of "muttering" about the quality of the jpgs. and its always useful to see what the raw files look like. I was able to convert these in the dcraw part of Rawker.

Here's a blow up from the building shot - top left. This is ISO 100.


Probably of more interest is a blowup from the bottom right shot which was taken at ISO 6400.


Considering that Rawker conversions are always more noisy than Photoshop, this is pretty good. I certainly would have no issue with this. 

The jpg. samples I saw shot at high ISO's with the A77 were certainly very "mushy" but this isn't. From this very limited number of samples, it does seem as if the 24MP Sony sensor has a fairly strong Anti-Aliasing filter. But then with this many pixels on an APS-C sensor it would be surprising if it didn't. Also no surprise is that there seems to be a fairly limited dynamic range. Looking at these converted files they did look to me very like m4/3 files. I would imagine that they will probably need careful exposure and processing. 

However on this limited evidence it does seem as if the Sony cameras that use this sensor (and expect to see it in other cameras before long) will be capable of producing very decent, very large files.

Olympus E-P3 and Photoshop ACR - finally!

Last night and before this mornings bid from Sony to dominate the Professional, Enthusiast, DSLR and CSC photographic markets all at once from here on in, (they may well succeed!) there was another announcement that gave me great pleasure. Photoshop ACR 6.5 has finally been released. 

Finally I've been able to see what the raw files from the Olympus E-P3 look like, processed in decent software. Rawker gave me the sharpness, but very flat colour and a lot of noise, and the Olympus software gave me files that looked just like the jpgs. Finally. I've been able to see what the camera is capable of.

And its capable of a great deal. 

It seems to me it is an improved sensor. 

ISO 200 looks as good as ISO 100 on previous cameras without the dynamic range problems.

A head to head comparison with the NEX-C3 (which the update also supports) produced sharper results for me than the Sony. (I can now do a proper test)

The 12mm f/2 is a stunning lens on the E-P3.

The 25mm f/1.4 is an even more stunning lens on the E-P3.

Following on from that last sentence, I'll be spending the rest of the day trying to sort out this "aperture clicking", which is really annoying. It doesn't do it at all indoors in low light, but since I spend most of my time photographing in bright sunlight, when it does do it, I have to find a solution.

No matter how good the NEX-7 is, it will never look as beautiful as the E-P3. I know thats not a good reason to buy it or justify my keeping it around.............  or maybe it is!!

Olympus E-PL1 and Photoshop - "Correct" Exposure

While I've been very impressed with what Capture One Pro from Phase One can do, I am unsure as to whether I'm going to buy it when my trial period runs out. Firstly its expensive, though they are offering a 30% discount until 28th August. Secondly, its more complicated and takes longer to process images than Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop. Thirdly, its not really how I like to work. I prefer a simpler raw conversion that lets me do the majority of the work I want to on a file in Photoshop, rather than in the raw conversion software.

The trial I have downloaded also lets me try out the Express version of the software, though the nice thing about the Pro version is that it lets me open the files immediately in Photoshop.

I have tried most of the raw converters on the market and as I wrote yesterday this version of Capture One is the best I've ever used. The question is whether I want to go for the extra "complication" of stand alone software, even though it does integrate with Photoshop.  It is very tempting, since some of the files I've produced are very impressive and it does do a very good job with m4/3 files.

However, using Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw works very well too. All the files in this post were processed using that combination. I wrote yesterday about the need to expose and "develop" carefully with m4/3, in order to get the best out of it. While I think the criticisms regarding the more limited dynamic range of m4/3 are often overstated, there is no doubt that it is more prone to blown highlights than other larger sensor formats. Particularly when it is also the case that the default metering settings of all the Panasonic and Olympus cameras that I have used have a tendency to over expose for my tastes.

I generally have all my m4/3 cameras set to - 0.7 in terms of exposure compensation, and this, more often than not gives me the exposure that I find most accurate. In fact, I do this with most of my cameras. It happens with both my Nikons and there has been a lot written in forums about how the Nikon D7000 has a tendency to over-expose slightly. While I can understand doing this in point-and-shoot compacts when the users probably won't make any adjustments to the file after taking the shot, it does seem a little strange in cameras that are aimed at a different market.

I'm not advocating deliberate under exposure here, I'm actually talking about getting the exposure correct. There is this theory that with digital cameras, you should expose to avoid having to lift the shadow areas, because thats where noise can be generated. However that does assume that you get the exposure right in the first place. Also using the new Sony 16MP sensor in the NEX-C3, Nikon D7000, Pentax K-5 etc. there are far less problems in exposing for the highlights, as that sensor allows shadow areas to be lightened quite dramatically with no or very little increase in noise.

Micro Four-Thirds is not quite as forgiving as this, though here's an example where I've lifted the shadows with no great increase in noise.



The other great advantage of continuing to work with Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw, is familiarity. I feel that I've only begun to scratch the surface with Capture One Pro, and the question is do I want to allocate the time to learning all its possibilities. I have no doubt that this would be a worthwhile exercise but whether I decide to do that remains to be seen.

Raw processing


I've been making quite a big thing out of the fact that there is no support as yet for the Olympus E-P3 in either Photoshop or Lightroom. Indeed, at the moment Adobe is a little slow in releasing ACR 6.5. There is a beta version normally available of new updates and Dpreview have already mentioned that they are using it. However for some reason Adobe have chosen to keep this one secret. 

The Panasonic G3 and Sony NEX-C3, cameras which have been released a while are also unsupported. 

This does make a difference to me, as I always get my best results using Adobe Camera Raw. Quite simply I find the parameters for the adjustments are more sophisticated, enable greater control and work much quicker than the fairly ordinary software that is bundled with cameras.

Here are some examples of what I'm currently using for the Nikon D7000.


These are the basic settings I will use. Most are determined by the information within the file, but if shot outdoors I always make sure the white balance is set to daylight and recovery is full on to give the highlights as much protection as possible.


As a further aid to highlight protection I use the above tone curve.


In terms of sharpening I add quite a lot but keep the radius setting quite slow. This does add some luminance noise to the image and I generally select all the sky in Photoshop and "smooth" it out. My benchmark as to how a file should look is my Leica M9. By using this amount of sharpening I'm able to get the look of an image shot with a sensor that has no anti-aliasing filter. 

The D7000 files are actually quite soft due to the AA filter and as far as I'm concerned need more sharpening than say my Olympus or Leica cameras. I have different settings for them.

After a bit of straightening and tidying up in Photoshop, I then make sure I'm happy with all the colours and contrast, adjust them if I'm not, and I end up with a finished file.





I do very little batch processing and work on the files on an individual basis, which takes time but ensures good results. I've never been able to get this level of control and speed in any other software, including Lightroom, and this explains my impatience for Adobe to release their new version of ACR.

Olympus 12mm f/2 raw files available for download

I'm making three raw files shot with the Olympus E-PL1 / 12mm f/2 combination available for download. These files are .dng format and should open in all versions of Photoshop and Lightroom that support Adobe Camera Raw. They should also open in any software that supports .dng, but I cannot say that for certain.

Please note - these are copyright files and are for your PERSONAL EVALUATION ONLY. They must not be used for any other purpose whatsoever, nor re-posted, nor re-redistributed.

Raw "raw files"

A few recently edited images.

These were converted from raw using dcraw based software. The conversion was made as "neutral" or "flat" as possible to create a file for editing that was as close to the original capture as possible.

This type of conversion bypasses many of the parameters that camera manufacturers use to "correct" their files.

I tried files from many different cameras and discovered that the differences between files converted this way and files converted using either the manufacturers software or photoshop were minimal.

Some were slightly sharper, some were slightly noisier, but overall I found no substantial difference that justifies the claims made for various raw conversion packages. So if you are looking for something relatively inexpensive and simple to convert your raw files these dcraw converters are excellent.

At the same time however, I found no compelling reason to abandon photoshop and my current method of conversion for this simpler "purer" software. Its still a quicker workflow for me to use one piece of software for everything.

Its worth having a look at dcraw based software to see what your raw files really look like, but don't expect a "road to Damascus" moment, though it can be revealing. (see the previous post on Panasonic image size)

The most important element for me in producing high quality images was, is and always will be getting it right when I press the shutter. It was true with film and its true for digital.

There's really not much more to my photography than composition and exposure.
